Indications
Probitor 40mg is indicated for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastric and duodenal ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and erosive esophagitis.
Pharmacology
Probitor 40mg contains Omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It works by irreversibly inhibiting the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme in the gastric parietal cells, significantly reducing stomach acid secretion.
Dosage & Administration

Adults: 20–40 mg once daily before meals

GERD & Ulcers: Typically 4–8 weeks of therapy

Swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew

Dose adjustments may be required in certain conditions
Interaction

May reduce absorption of drugs like ketoconazole, atazanavir, and iron salts

May enhance the effect of warfarin, diazepam, and phenytoin
-
Avoid concurrent use with clopidogrel unless necessary
Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to omeprazole or other PPIs

Not recommended in patients with severe hepatic impairment without monitoring
Side Effects

Common: Headache, nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, flatulence

Rare: Vitamin B12 deficiency, hypomagnesemia, skin rash, dizziness
Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy: Category C; use only if clearly needed and prescribed

Lactation: Omeprazole is excreted in breast milk; consult a physician before use
Precautions & Warnings

Long-term use may increase the risk of bone fractures, C. difficile infection, and B12 deficiency

Monitor magnesium levels for prolonged use

Use caution in elderly and patients with liver problems
